About Sphenarches anisodactylus (Walker, 1864)

Sphenarches anisodactylus, commonly known as the geranium plume moth or fire-flag plume moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Pterophoridae. This species has been recorded in western Africa, Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, the New Hebrides, Central America, South America, and Australia, where it occurs from Cape York to central New South Wales. It is also found in the United States, with recorded sightings in Florida and Mississippi, and it is present on the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand. The wingspan of Sphenarches anisodactylus is approximately 10 millimetres (0.39 in). The larvae of this species feed on the flower buds and flowers of Dolichos lablab, Lagenaria, Pelargonium, and species within the Fabaceae family. Additional recorded food plants for the larvae include Brillantaisia lamium, Caperonia castaneifolia, Phaseolus vulgaris, Hibiscus mutabilis, Thalia geniculata, Mimosa pudica, species in the Orchidaceae family, Averrhoa bilimbi, Passiflora foetida, Antirrhinum majus, Theobroma cacao, and Lantana camara.
