About Sphegina rufiventris Loew, 1863
Sphegina rufiventris Loew, 1863, commonly called the Black-horned Pufftail, is a common species of syrphid fly that has been observed in the northeastern United States. Members of this hoverfly group can stay nearly motionless while in flight. Adult individuals of this species are also known as flower flies, because they are commonly found on flowers. Adults get energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen from these flowers. The larvae of Sphegina rufiventris live in accumulations of decaying sap under bark. This habitat is usually a wet location, such as damp, shaded woodland, and partially submerged wood in streams and pools.
