About Sphagnum macrophyllum Bernh. ex Brid.
Sphagnum macrophyllum, commonly called largeleaf sphagnum, is a species of peat moss native to southern and eastern North America. It has been recorded in every state from Texas to New Jersey, as well as New York, and in the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. This moss grows floating on the surfaces of lakes and ponds. Sphagnum macrophyllum produces fronds that range in color from dark brown to nearly black. Its leaves are shaped like lance heads, tapering to a point at the tip.
