About Sphaeroma papillae (Bayliff, 1938)

Sphaeroma papillae is a species of isopod belonging to the family Sphaeromatidae. It is known from southern New England, and may be endemic to that region. This species was first described from Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island in 1938; since its initial description, it has also been discovered at other sites along the north shores of Long Island and Cape Cod. Sphaeroma papillae can be distinguished from the closely similar species Sphaeroma quadridentatum by two key traits: it has two tubercles on the telson, and the outer margin of its outer uropod branch is not serrated. It typically inhabits intertidal zone areas that are directly influenced by fresh water, including seeps and pond outlets.
