About Sphaerodactylus elegans (Macleay, 1834)

This species has two described subspecies. The nominate subspecies, Sphaerodactylus elegans elegans, is a small reptile with granular scales. The maximum snout length of this subspecies is 39 millimeters. Its body coloration includes a midsection that is green, and a tail that can range from red to blue. This subspecies always has thin horizontal black bands across its body. Its limbs vary in color, and appear almost opaque when compared to the rest of the body. There are no color differences between males and females of this subspecies. The other recognized subspecies is Sphaerodactylus elegans punctatissimus. This subspecies has more muted, earthy overall color tones that are less vibrant than the nominate subspecies, and it features a more prominently spotted pattern.
