About Sphaeralcea coulteri (S.Watson) A.Gray

Sphaeralcea coulteri is a flowering plant species in the mallow family, commonly called Coulter's globemallow. It is native to the Sonoran Desert, with a distribution that ranges from northern Mexico northward into the U.S. states of California and Arizona. This plant is an annual herb that produces slender, hairy stems. These stems can either sprawl or grow erect, reaching a maximum height close to 1.5 meters. The plant has thin, gray-green leaf blades that are wide and short, and shaped like hearts or triangles. Leaf blades grow up to around 5 centimeters long, with a few wide lobes along their edges; these edges may bear teeth or smaller lobes. A leafy inflorescence produces clusters of flowers. Each flower has five wedge-shaped orange petals around one centimeter long, surrounding yellow anthers.
