About Speyeria edwardsii (Reakirt, 1866)

Speyeria edwardsii, commonly known as the Edwards' fritillary, is a butterfly species in the family Nymphalidae that is native to North America. It is common across a range that extends from Alberta east to Manitoba, and reaches as far south as northern New Mexico. This species is primarily orange, with distinct dark brown bars on the upper side of its wings. The margins of the wings are dark, marked with lighter circles followed by darker crescents. The yellowish underside of the wings is dominated by silvery spots. The wingspan of adult Edwards' fritillary measures between 60 to 86 mm, or 2.4 to 3.4 inches. The larval stage of this butterfly feeds on Viola nuttallii.
