About Speyeria atlantis hesperis (Edwards, 1864)
This subspecies, Speyeria atlantis hesperis, first described by Edwards in 1864, can be identified by its wing characteristics. The upperside of its wings is dark orange, marked with multiple rows of black patterns and solid black wing margins. The underside of its wings is light brown and covered in numerous silvery-white spots. Its wingspan falls between 50 to 64 millimeters, which equals 2.0 to 2.5 inches. For its life cycle, violet species act as host plants for this subspecies' larvae. Adult Speyeria atlantis hesperis feed on a range of plants including common milkweed, mint, mountain laurel, crown vetch, burdock, boneset, ox-eye daisy, spiraea, and virgin's bower.
