About Speyeria atlantis (Edwards, 1862)
Speyeria atlantis, first described by Edwards in 1862, has distinct dorsal and ventral wing coloration and patterning. The upperside of its wings is dark orange, marked with multiple rows of black markings and solid black wing margins. The underside of its wings is light brown, covered with numerous silvery-white spots. This species has a wingspan that ranges from 50 to 64 millimetres, which equals 2.0 to 2.5 inches. In its life cycle, violet plants serve as host plants for this species' larvae. Adult Speyeria atlantis feed on a range of nectar sources, including common milkweed, mint, mountain laurel, crown vetch, burdock, boneset, ox-eye daisy, spiraea, and virgin's bower.
