About Spermophaga haematina (Vieillot, 1807)

The western bluebill, with the scientific name Spermophaga haematina, is a common species of estrildid finch native to Africa. Its estimated global extent of occurrence is 1,900,000 km². This species is native to the Guineo-Congolian region, the Jos Plateau, and the area ranging from western Gambia to Guinea Bissau. The IUCN has classified the western bluebill as a species of least concern. Male western bluebills have a blue bill tipped with red, red flanks extending from the chin to the breast, and a distinctive white-blue eye ring. Female western bluebills have a blue bill with much less red at the tip, and face coloring that can be black, lightly washed red, or maroon.
