About Spergularia canadensis (Pers.) G.Don
Spergularia canadensis (Pers.) G.Don is a species of flowering plant in the Caryophyllaceae family, commonly called Canadian sandspurry. It is native to North America, where it grows primarily in coastal habitats. It occurs along the coastlines of Canada and the northern United States: along the West Coast it ranges from Alaska to northern California, and on the East Coast it extends as far south as New York. This species grows in wet, often saline substrates including beaches, salt marshes, and brackish estuaries. It is an annual herb that produces a stem that may be slender or thick, reaching up to 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) long. Fleshy linear leaves up to 4.5 centimeters (1.8 inches) long grow along this stem. Small flowers develop both in an inflorescence at the tip of the stem and in the axils of leaves. Each small flower has five pointed sepals and five oval white or pink petals. Its fruit is a capsule that holds shiny reddish brown seeds.
