Sparisoma rubripinne is a medium-sized parrotfish that reaches a maximum total length of 47.8 cm. This species shows distinct coloration patterns across different life phases and sexes. Juveniles and initial-phase adults have a muted silver-tan base color, with a barred pattern across their scales. Both of these groups also have a bright yellow caudal peduncle and bright yellow caudal fin. Terminal phase males differ in appearance: they are dull blueish-green, and have a large black spot at the base of the pectoral fin.
