About Spalax leucodon Nordmann, 1840

The lesser blind mole-rat, scientifically named Spalax leucodon Nordmann, 1840 (also referenced as Nannospalax leucodon), is a rodent species belonging to the family Spalacidae. This species occurs in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, North Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, and Ukraine. Contrary to what its common name suggests, blind mole-rats are not completely blind. They have simple eyes that are 1mm in diameter, positioned under a layer of skin and fur. These eyes function effectively as light meters, only capable of detecting the level of available ambient light.
