Sonchus palmensis (Sch.Bip.) Boulos is a tall shrub that grows up to 2 meters in height. Its leaves are pinnatisect, with 10 to 15 pairs of equally spaced lobes that measure 6–40 mm wide. The plant produces a very large, dense, compound-corymbose inflorescence. Each individual flower head contains 30 to 50 yellow ray florets and no disc florets. This species is widespread on the island of La Palma, occurring especially along the east coast in locations including Fuencaliente, Mazo, Santa Cruz, Las Breñas, Puntallana, La Galga, and Los Tilos. It also grows along the west coast in locations such as Los Llanos. It can be found up to 1000 meters above sea level, in lower zones and forest zones.
