About Solorina saccata (L.) Ach.

Solorina saccata, which has the scientific name Solorina saccata (L.) Ach., is commonly known as the chocolate chip lichen. This lichen grows on calcareous rocks, most often in rock crevices, and always occurs in sheltered environments. Its distribution ranges from Mediterranean mountains all the way to the Arctic. It can be distinguished from other alpine species belonging to the genus Solorina by the four two-celled spores contained in each of its asci.
