About Solidago gigantea Aiton

Scientific name: Solidago gigantea Aiton. Solidago gigantea is a perennial herb that grows up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall, and can sometimes spread via underground rhizomes. It often grows in clumps, with no leaves at the base and numerous leaves growing along the stem. The top of each stem produces a large cluster of many small flower heads, which can sometimes number several hundred. Each flower head is yellow, and contains both disc florets and ray florets. This species grows across a wide range of natural habitats, but it only grows in areas that have at least seasonally moist soils. It is a widespread species native to most of non-arctic North America located east of the Rocky Mountains. It has been recorded in every state and province ranging from Alberta to Nova Scotia, all the way to Florida and Texas, and also in the state of Nuevo León in northeastern Mexico.
