About Solanum sarrachoides Sendtn.

Solanum sarrachoides Sendtn. is a South American nightshade species commonly called hairy nightshade or leafy-fruited nightshade. For a long time, many authors incorrectly applied the scientific name Solanum sarrachoides to a different species, Solanum physalifolium. The originally misidentified specimens labeled as S. sarrachoides were classified as the variety Solanum physalifolium var. nitidibaccatum, which has also been treated as the separate species Solanum nitidibaccatum. The true Solanum sarrachoides was also previously considered a variety of S. tweedianum, placed under the obsolete name S. atriplicifolium, a classification established by Gilli based on Nees' work. This species exists as an introduced plant in the Southeastern United States and many other regions worldwide.
