About Solanum pimpinellifolium L.

Solanum pimpinellifolium L. is commonly called the currant tomato or pimp. It is a wild tomato species originally native to Ecuador and Peru, but has become naturalized in other locations including the Galápagos Islands. This species produces small edible fruits, and it is commonly grown in gardens as an heirloom tomato. Unlike the widely cultivated domestic tomato species Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum pimpinellifolium is considered a wild rather than a domesticated species. The genome of Solanum pimpinellifolium L. was sequenced in 2012.
