About Solanum paniculatum L.

Solanum paniculatum L., commonly called jurubeba, is a nightshade species that is widespread across nearly all of Brazil. This plant is used for medicinal purposes, and has a bitter flavor. A popular folk preparation infuses the plant’s stem and root into sugar cane alcohol known as cachaça, which is consumed as either an apéritif or a digestif. In rural areas, the fruits of Solanum paniculatum are traditionally eaten after being pickled in a mixture of brine and vinegar.
