About Sminthurus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758)

Scientific name: Sminthurus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758). Like other members of the family Sminthuridae, S. viridis has a roughly globular body shape. The species varies in overall coloration, but most individuals have patchy bright green or yellowish bodies. For a Collembola species, it is fairly large, commonly growing up to around 3 millimeters in length. S. viridis has a well-developed furcula, and will leap actively when it feels alarmed. Its mouthparts are mandibulate, meaning it has biting mouthparts. Only the tips of the mandibles project out from the mouth folds, however.
