About Smilax tamnoides L.

Smilax tamnoides L. can grow as either a shrub or a climbing, prickly vine, which uses other vegetation for support. When it grows as a vine, it reaches 30 to 45 feet (9.1 to 13.7 meters) in length. Its flowers are small, grow in large numbers in umbel clusters, and range in color from green to brown. The fruits are blue to black, and lack the waxy coating found on many other species in the Smilax genus. Smilax tamnoides occurs in a range of habitat types, including mixed pine forests, wooded hammocks, wooded ravines, and river bluffs.
