About Smilax pumila Walter

Smilax pumila, commonly known as the sarsaparilla vine, is a North American plant species native to the southeastern United States, where its range extends from eastern Texas to South Carolina. It grows in habitats including forested floodplains and areas alongside rivers. This is the only Smilax species that does not have thorns. It either grows along the ground or climbs over other vegetation. Its flowers are yellow, and it produces red, egg-shaped fruits.
