Smilax maritima Feay ex Alph.Wood is a branching vine that reaches up to 150 cm (60 inches) in height. Its leaves are small, shiny, and light green, and it produces black berries covered in a waxy coating. This species is primarily found in the Coastal Plain region of the United States, ranging from Virginia to peninsular Florida, and extending west to Texas. It has also been recorded in Puerto Rico. S. maritima grows in longleaf pine forests, river floodplains, mesic wooded areas, as well as disturbed or previously disturbed habitats including roadsides and burned savannas.
