About Smilax californica (A.DC.) A.Gray

Smilax californica (A.DC.) A.Gray has dull green, alternate leaves that grow on petioles, and range in shape from circular to heart-shaped. Its leaves are typically 5 to 10 centimetres (2 to 4 inches) long. The stems of this plant are round, green, and covered in sharp spines. This species is monoecious, and produces drooping clusters of flowers that grow in leaf axils. Its fruit is a black, roundish berry. This plant is native to northern California and southwestern Oregon. It grows near streambanks and in mixed forests, at elevations below 1,500 metres (5,000 ft).
