About Smilax australis R.Br.

Smilax australis R.Br. has common names including lawyer vine, austral sarsaparilla, barbwire vine, and "wait-a-while". It is a climbing vine in the plant family Smilacaceae that is endemic to Australia. Its climbing stems are prickly, reaching up to 8 metres in length, and it bears coiled tendrils up to 20 centimetres long. Its leaves are glossy, with 5 prominent longitudinal veins, and measure 5 to 15 centimetres long and 3 to 10 centimetres wide. This species grows in rainforest, sclerophyll forest, woodland, and heathland habitats. It can be found in the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Lord Howe Island, and the northeastern corner of Western Australia.
