About Smaug vandami (Fitzsimons, 1930)

Smaug vandami is a large lizard species. Adults can reach a snout-vent length (SVL) of 14.5 cm (5.7 in). It has a triangular head and spiny scales along its back. Its predominant body color is dark brown, marked with fragmented yellow rings. The type locality for this species is Gravelotte, located in Limpopo, South Africa. Its preferred natural habitats are grassland and savanna. Smaug vandami is ovoviviparous. It gives birth to between two and six live young during the summer season.
