About Sitochroa palealis (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
Sitochroa palealis, commonly called the carrot seed moth, is a species of moth in the family Crambidae. It was first described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller in 1775, with the official scientific name (Denis & Schiffermüller) 1775. This moth is native to Europe; the first recorded specimen found in the United States was reported in 2002. The wingspan of Sitochroa palealis ranges from 26 to 34 mm. The adult moth flies between June and July, with the exact flight period varying based on location. The larvae of this moth feed on Daucus carota, a species that includes cultivated carrots as a subspecies, Peucedanum oreoselinum, and species from three plant genera: Heracleum, Foeniculum, which includes cultivated fennel, and Silaum.
