About Siphonaria japonica (Donovan, 1824)
Siphonaria japonica (Donovan, 1824) has a hard, thick shell that is pale yellow or brown in color. Its shell has more than 20 radial ribs that are uniform in thickness. The siphonal ridge is underdeveloped, and cannot be clearly identified from either the inner or outer surface of the shell. This species occurs along the coasts of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China. It lives predominantly on rocky intertidal shores, and can also be found on human-made structures such as bridges and pilings. S. japonica generally moves in step with tidal movement, typically moving just before or after it is exposed to air. Like other limpets and false limpets, S. japonica returns to its home site while the area is still damp.
