About Sinosuthora webbiana (Gould, 1852)

The vinous-throated parrotbill, scientifically named Sinosuthora webbiana (Gould, 1852), is a relatively small, long-tailed parrotbill. Its total length ranges from 11 to 12.5 cm (4.3–4.9 in). Weight varies slightly by sex: males weigh 8.5 to 11 g (0.30–0.39 oz), while females weigh 7 to 12 g (0.25–0.42 oz). It has a graduated tail; like other parrotbills, its bill is short, and its nostrils are concealed by feather bristles. Plumage appearance is the same for both sexes. In the nominate subspecies, upperparts are warm brown, and wings are dark brown, with a chestnut tinge on the flight feathers. The upper breast and throat are pinkish-cream, with brown streaks across the throat. The flanks match the upperparts in color but are slightly buffy, and the belly is cream-buff that blends into the breast. The crown and forehead are rufescent brown. It has a pale grey iris, and its bill is either slate grey or brown with a paler or yellow tip. This parrotbill is distributed from northern Vietnam to southern Manchuria, and occupies a broad range of habitats across this range. It generally inhabits somewhat open wooded areas, including scrub, early successional to late mature secondary woodland, forest edges, thickets, and bamboo stands. It also lives in hedges, reeds, and marshes, and can adapt to human-modified habitats such as tea plantations and plant nurseries. In China, it occurs in lower montane areas. In Sichuan, it is replaced by the ashy-throated parrotbill at elevations above 1,000 m (3,300 ft). On Taiwan, where the vinous-throated parrotbill is the only parrotbill species, it occurs from sea level up to 3,100 m (10,200 ft), and occupies the widest ecological niche of any bird on the island.
