About Silphium albiflorum A.Gray

Silphium albiflorum A.Gray, commonly called white rosinweed, is a flowering plant species belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is native to the United States and is endemic to the state of Texas. Its natural habitat is open, calcareous prairies. This plant is a tall perennial with rigid, deeply divided leaves. It produces heads of white flowers from late spring through mid-summer. It grows slowly, but is extremely long-lived. Due to its narrow habitat requirements and low population recruitment, it is classified as a highly conservative species. It does not grow well in areas affected by suburban development, and faces significant threats across parts of its range.
