About Sersalisia sericea (Aiton) R.Br.
Sersalisia sericea (Aiton) R.Br., commonly called wild prune, mangarr, and mongo, is a species of shrub or small tree in the plant family Sapotaceae. It grows naturally in monsoon forest, littoral rainforest, and occasionally in more open forest types across Northern Australia. This species typically reaches 6 metres in height, though it can produce fruit when it is only a 1‑metre tall shrub. The plant is distinguished by dense rusty brown hairs covering its buds and young leaves. After clusters of small green‑white flowers bloom, it produces succulent dark purple fruit that contain one, or occasionally two, seeds. The fruit are succulent and edible. The Kunwinjku people of Western Arnhem Land call both the plant and its fruit "mandangnud". In addition to being used as a bush food, the seeds are occasionally used to make seed jewellery, which is sold to tourists in the local region.
