About Serruria nervosa Meisn.
Serruria nervosa, commonly known as the fluted spiderhead, is a flowering shrub in the genus Serruria that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This species is endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, where its distribution ranges from the Kleinrivierberge mountains to the Elim plain, and extends up to the coast. It is a small, upright shrub that reaches only 30 cm in height, and it flowers between July and November. The adult plant dies after fires, but its seeds are able to survive. Two months after flowering finishes, the fruit drops from the plant, and ants disperse the seeds by storing them in their nests. S. nervosa is a unisexual species, and pollination is carried out by insects. It grows in both calcareous and acidic soils, at elevations between 20 and 100 metres above sea level.
