About Sericornis maculatus Gould, 1847

The spotted scrubwren, with the scientific name Sericornis maculatus Gould, 1847, is a bird species native to coastal southern Australia. Its native range extends westward from Adelaide to Shark Bay in Western Australia. This species was formerly classified as the same species as the white-browed scrubwren. It is known to hybridize with the white-browed scrubwren in the Adelaide area, where their ranges overlap. In 2018, a genetic analysis study of the scrubwren family found that this taxon was more genetically divergent from the white-browed scrubwren than either the Tasmanian or Atherton scrubwrens. This study proposed reclassifying this taxon as a separate species, and the reclassification into a distinct species was completed in 2019.
