About Sepedon sphegea (Fabricius, 1775)

Sepedon sphegea (Fabricius, 1775) is a Palearctic fly species that belongs to the family Sciomyzidae, a group commonly called marsh flies or snail-killing flies. The larvae of this species feed on aquatic snails, and also act as opportunistic feeders that consume other invertebrates. This species occupies a range of habitats, including pond margins and damp meadows. It shows a particular preference for Iris pseudacorus plants that grow along pond edges. While adult Sepedon sphegea can be encountered year-round, their primary flight period occurs from March to October.
