About Sempervivum calcareum Jord.
Sempervivum calcareum, commonly called houseleek, is a flowering plant species belonging to the stonecrop family Crassulaceae. It is native to the southern Alps in Europe. It is an evergreen succulent perennial that grows water-storing thick leaves arranged in a rosette. Its leaves are typically green, with reddish-purple tips. This species reproduces through both asexual budding and monocarpic sexual reproduction. Sempervivum calcareum is grown as an ornamental garden plant, and grows best in well-drained locations with full sun, such as rockeries. Three of its cultivars—'Extra', 'Guillaumes', and 'Sir William Lawrence'—have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
