About Semioscopis steinkellneriana (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775

Semioscopis steinkellneriana is a moth species belonging to the family Depressariidae. This species ranges across most of Europe, excluding southern Balkan Peninsula and Portugal, and extends east to the eastern regions of the Palearctic realm. Its wingspan measures 19–25 mm. The forewings are light brown, sometimes with a rosy tinge, and marked with a few dark fuscous scales. They have a small black subcostal dot close to the base, a curved blackish longitudinal mark in the disc before the middle, and a second discal stigma that forms an angulated blackish transverse mark connected to a fuscous spot on the costa. Veins 2 and 3 are stalked. The hindwings are light grey. Full-grown larvae are whitish-green with a darker dorsal line, and their heads and second segment plate are marked with black. Adults are active in April, and fly very early in the morning. The larvae feed on Prunus spinosa, as well as species in the genera Crataegus, Cotoneaster, Fraxinus, and Sorbus. Larvae live inside a spun or rolled leaf, and the species overwinters in the pupal stage.
