About Selaginella rupestris (L.) Spring

Selaginella rupestris, commonly called northern selaginella, is also known locally as ledge spike-moss or rock spike-moss. It is a species of spike-moss that grows in dry rocky locations across eastern North America, with one known growing site in Greenland. This species has a wide but scattered distribution across its range. When water is not available, Selaginella rupestris curls into a ball, which earned it the additional common name of bird nest moss. When it comes into contact with water again, it opens back up. Within the United States, Selaginella rupestris is classified as imperiled and threatened in the state of Indiana.
