About Selaginella hansenii Hieron.
Selaginella hansenii Hieron. is a spikemoss species commonly known as Hansen's spikemoss. It is endemic to California, found across the central region of the state. Its range extends from the lowest parts of the Cascade Range, through the Central Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada, to the southern end of the Central Valley and the Tehachapi Mountains. It grows in a variety of rocky habitats in hills and mountain areas. This lycophyte grows as either loose or dense mats made of spreading stems that have small, forking branches. Its leaves are lance-shaped or triangular, and reach up to 5 to 6 millimeters in length when counting the soft, white bristles at the leaf tips. The leaves are green, often tinged with red, or may be entirely red. The strobili that hold the plant's reproductive structures are less than one centimeter long.
