About Selaginella bigelovii Underw.
Selaginella bigelovii Underw. is a species of spikemoss that has two common names: bushy spikemoss and Bigelow's spikemoss. It is native to California and Baja California. In this region, it grows on rocky terrain in a wide range of habitat types, ranging from coastal areas to mountain regions and deserts. As a lycophyte, it grows in clumps made up of spreading upright to erect stems. These stems can reach up to 20 centimeters long, and bear a small number of short lateral branches. Its green leaves are linear or lance-shaped, and can grow up to 4 millimeters long, counting the tiny rigid bristles at the leaf tips. The leaves either lie flattened against the stem or extend outward from the stem very slightly. The strobili that grow at the leaf bases are yellow-orange in color.
