Selaginella arizonica Maxon plants grow in a prostrate, freely branching, matted form. Their stems measure between 5 and 20 centimeters (2.0 to 7.9 inches) long, and bear short ultimate branches with slightly upward-curving tips. Young individuals of this species are bright green, and mature plants develop a grayer color as they age.
