About Sedum villosum L.

Scientific name: Sedum villosum L.

Sedum villosum, commonly called the hairy stonecrop or purple stonecrop, is a flowering plant that grows as a biennial or a perennial. Its leaves range from 3 to 8 mm (0.1 to 0.3 in) in length, and may take on a reddish color. Most individuals have leaves covered with hairs, though the variety S. villosum var. glabratum can have hairless leaves. Each individual flower has five pink petals, and every petal grows up to 5 mm (0.2 in) long.

This species is native to Greenland, Iceland, and northern and central Europe, with its native range extending east to Lithuania and Poland. It has also been recorded growing on islands in south-eastern Canada. Within Britain, it occurs as far south as mid-Yorkshire. Unlike most other species in the genus Sedum, S. villosum is unusual in that it prefers damp habitats.
