About Scutellastra longicosta (Lamarck, 1819)

Scutellastra longicosta, formally described by Lamarck in 1819, has approximately eleven long, spiked ribs that give it a star-shaped outline. It reaches a diameter of around 70 millimeters (2.8 inches). The inner surface of the species is glossy white or bluish-white, and it often has a narrow black rim. This species occurs on the eastern and southern coasts of South Africa; its range stretches from Richards Bay, around Cape Province, to the Cape of Good Hope. It inhabits the mid-to-lower intertidal zone on rocky surfaces.
