About Scutellastra barbara (Linnaeus, 1758)

The bearded limpet, Scutellastra barbara (Linnaeus, 1758), previously classified as Patella barbara, reaches an observed size of around 100 mm. Along the coast of South Africa, different populations of this species are both morphologically indistinguishable and genetically homogenous. This species is distributed across the east and west coasts of South Africa, ranging between Port Nolloth and Umpangazi. Juvenile Scutellastra barbara prefer to settle on substrates made of Haliotis midae shells, and the species is typically found in intertidal areas at low densities.
