About Scutellaria brittonii Porter
Scutellaria brittonii is an upright plant that grows between 4 and 8 inches tall each growing season. It has a square stem, with long, thin leaves arranged in opposite pairs along the stem. The leaf veins are long, extend almost the full length of the leaf, and run nearly parallel to one another. Flowers typically grow upward from a calyx. The calyx is reddish-purple, with a central slit through which the flower emerges, and a transverse ridge running across the top of its upper lip. Each flower forms a curved, horn-like tube that opens into a hooded bloom. The base of the floral tube is usually white, and its color becomes increasingly purple toward the end away from the stem. The upper hood of the flower is narrower than the lower lip, which spreads out below the hood. Flowers measure between 1 and 1.5 inches long, and grow in clusters from the leaf nodes. All parts of the plant are covered in many soft, short hairs.
