About Scrophularia sambucifolia L.
Scrophularia sambucifolia L. is a perennial, rhizomatous, glabrous herb. Its stems grow up to 1.90 m (6.2 ft) tall, and have little to no branching. The inflorescence is typically 15–50 cm (5.9–19.7 in) long, and bears 1 to 10 opposite flowers. The flower corolla can be orange-reddish, orange-purple, or greenish-yellow with orange spots, and its upper lip is reddish purple. The anthers are yellow, sometimes with bluish margins. The staminode is purple, sometimes greenish-purple. This species is native to the southwest Iberian Peninsula (including central and southern Portugal, mainly the Médio Tejo, Lezíria do Tejo, Baixo Alentejo and Algarve regions, plus southwest Spain and Gibraltar) and Northwest Africa (including Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia). It grows in moist sites, usually near the banks of watercourses, and prefers deep soils formed from mud or limestone.
