Scophthalmus maximus, commonly called turbot, is a large left-eyed flatfish. It lives primarily near shore in shallow sandy waters across the Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and North Atlantic. This species, also known as European turbot, has an asymmetric, disk-shaped body. Recorded maximum growth for the species reaches 1 metre (40 inches) in length and 25 kilograms (55 pounds) in weight.
