About Scomberomorus tritor (Cuvier, 1832)
The West African Spanish mackerel, scientifically known as Scomberomorus tritor, is a fish species belonging to the family Scombridae. Recorded specimens of this species reach a maximum length of 100 cm and a maximum weight of 6 kg. Its back is bluish-green, which fades to silver along its sides, and the sides are marked with around three rows of vertically elongated orange spots. This species is distributed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, along the Atlantic coasts of Africa ranging from the Canary Islands and Senegal to the Gulf of Guinea and Baía dos Tigres, Angola. It is rarely observed in the northern Mediterranean Sea, along the coasts of France and Italy. West African Spanish mackerel form schools close to shore. They feed on small fish, particularly clupeoids such as sardines and anchovies. Many authors have incorrectly treated Scomberomorus tritor as a synonym of Scomberomorus maculatus.
