About Scolytus multistriatus (T.Marsham, 1802)

Scolytus multistriatus, commonly known as the European elm bark beetle or smaller European elm bark beetle, is a species of bark beetle belonging to the genus Scolytus. In Europe, S. multistriatus acts as a vector for Dutch elm disease, which is caused by the ascomycete fungus Ophiostoma ulmi. It is much less effective at spreading the disease than the large elm bark beetle, S. scolytus. During oviposition, S. multistriatus uses vanillin and syringaldehyde as signals to locate a host tree.
