About Scolia hirta (Schrank, 1781)

Adults of Scolia hirta reach a length of 10 to 25 millimetres (0.39 to 0.98 inches). The entire body is black, with two glossy yellow stripes on the abdomen. The wings are smoky-dark and have blue reflexes. Male antennae, which are made of 13 segments, are longer than female antennae, which have 12 segments. Additionally, males have three large spines at the tip of their abdomen. This species looks quite similar to Scolia sexmaculata; Scolia sexmaculata has two or three yellow spots rather than two yellow stripes. Scolia hirta is found across most of Mediterranean and central Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, the Near East, and North Africa.
