About Scleria oligantha Michx.
Scleria oligantha Michx. is a plant species that produces erect culms, which most often grow in tufts and reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters, or approximately 11.81 to 23.62 inches. Its leaf blades are ribbed and linear, typically shorter than the culms, and measure 2 to 6 millimeters wide. The bases of its flowering stems may range from red to purple. Its inflorescences grow both from leaf axils and at stem tips, forming 2 to 5 small clusters that each contain 1 to 4 spikelets. S. oligantha fruits from spring through summer, and produces achenes that vary in color from white to grayish brown. In the United States, S. oligantha ranges from Ohio south to Florida, and west to Texas and Oklahoma. Populations also exist in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. This species grows in mesic to xeric environments, and occurs in habitats including forests, meadows, and swamp forests.
